Getting started
Decided to give real estate career a try?
The first thing you need to do is obtain a real estate
license. The requirements for the license vary from
state to state, but usually have minimum requirement
for age, education and/or experience.
Most states differentiate between a real estate sales
agent and real estate broker. The difference is in
the fact that a broker has a permit to deal directly
with home buyers and sellers, or can have a staff of
salespersons or agents working for him/her. A real estate
sales person has to work with a broker.
Some states, however, have the same license for both,
meaning if you pass the state exam for a sales
person, you can work independently right away.
Qualifying candidates can skip right through to the
brokers license. You can go for a brokers license if
you: have a 4 year college degree or if you have a sales
person's license and at least two years of being
active in a real estate field.
Procedure for becoming a real estate sales person varies
from state to state. However, the common
denominator in all is going through an approved school
and getting credit hours. In some states you can
enroll in an online school, but in some you have to
go to a classroom setting. See our participating
states for pre - licensing schools.
After you're done with school you have anywhere in
between 4 and 8 weeks of waiting period until your exam,
depending on the state. Use that time wisely by going
through our prep software to ensure that you pass at
the first go. Our VTS (Virtual
Tutor System) is a very valuable tool while in school
too, since
it's a comprehensive system designed to prep you for
the licensing exam so that you ensure passing
the exam at the first go. (Read our 100% Guarantee Policy)
The state government issues and oversees licenses.
For test registration details visit your state
commissioner's website. If you are a registered user
of our website, you have a quick link to the state
commissioner's website on the home page, on the personalized
side of the screen (left, below the
menu bar)
Once you are done with the testing and obtain your
license, come back to our website and take a look at
our career tools. We help you prepare your resume, prepare
the interview and we even pass your
resume along to our participating brokers to help you
get started as soon as possible.
All candidates are welcome to submit their resumes,
even if you are not enrolled in a school yet. However,
you have a much stronger chance to be called for an
interview if you are further along in the process. You
can review and update your profile as you go along too.
